Board Certified Vascular Surgeon
Dr. Sean J. English, MD, is board-certified in Vascular Surgery by the American Board of Surgery, and he is a Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation. Dr. English is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He earned a degree in Physics from the College of Wooster. Dr. English then completed a Research Training Award with the National Institutes of Health, prior to and during medical school at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. While completing his residency in General Surgery at the University of Michigan, Dr. English was awarded a prestigious Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service F32 Award for the study of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) development and the use of functional imaging techniques to predict AAA rupture. Dr. English was also acknowledged with several awards for his research and work as a resident.
Dr. English completed his fellowship in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. While there, he received a Society for Vascular Surgery Foundation Clinical Research Seed Grant to continue his work studying AAA development and rupture. Dr. English took a tenure-track position with Washington University in St. Louis, working at both Barnes Jewish Hospital and the John Cochran VA Medical Center. Dr. English was acknowledged for his role as a medical student, resident, and fellow educator, while also growing a busy vascular surgery practice. He earned the highly competitive University of California San Francisco 2017 Wylie Scholar Vascular Surgery Research Award with grant funding, and he ran a well-recognized National Institutes of Health R01 funded research laboratory, continuing his study of AAA development and rupture, as well as theranostics for AAA rupture prediction and prevention.
Dr. English has been invited to speak about his research and topics in vascular surgery both nationally and internationally. His work has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Annals of Surgery, Journal of Vascular Surgery, Nature Scientific Reports, and Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging. Dr. English has been the principal site investigator and co-investigator for several vascular surgery clinical trials, while also serving on vascular surgery industry advisory boards.
Dr. English met his wife in St. Louis, and they started a family there. Due to family needs, Dr. English relocated his wife and children to northern Alabama, where he also built a busy and successful practice. He brought his expertise in multiple areas of vascular surgery to a community practice and started several new vascular surgery programs for the hospital system.
Dr. English and his wife relocated to South Carolina to provide more opportunity for their family. Dr. English provides comprehensive vascular care to the Charleston community and region at large. He has extensive experience with state-of-the-art endovascular techniques, as well as traditional, open surgical repair. Like his partners, Dr. English provides patient-centered care; his goal for every patient is to provide the best possible result and outcome, with as minimally invasive an approach as possible.
Dr. English treats the following disease processes and performs the associated procedures and operations:
- Cerebrovascular revascularization: carotid stenting under flow reversal (TCAR) and open endarterectomy for symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid stenosis
- Dialysis access: arteriovenous fistula (AVF) creation, arteriovenous grafting, and endovascular AVF creation for end-stage renal disease
- Thoracic and abdominal aortic, as well as iliac artery endovascular stent grafting and open repair for associated aneurysm and dissection
- Mesenteric and renal artery stenting and open revascularization for mesenteric ischemia (abdominal pain after eating, weight loss, food fear) and uncontrolled renovascular hypertension, respectively
- Aortoiliac occlusive disease stenting and open revascularization for lower extremity pain with ambulation and at rest, as well as toe and foot wounds
- Lower extremity peripheral artery disease limb salvage with endovascular revascularization: atherectomy, intravascular lithotripsy, angioplasty, stenting, and DETOUR bypass, as well as open bypass grafting for lower extremity pain with ambulation and at rest, as well as toe and foot wounds
- Endovascular mechanical thrombectomy for deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary artery suction thrombectomy for pulmonary emboli
- Stenting for iliac vein compression (May-Thurner anatomy and syndrome)
- Percutaneous ablation for large varicose veins and associated venous stasis ulcers, as well as cosmetic sclerotherapy for spider and reticular veins
- Wound center supervision for ischemic foot wounds and lower extremity venous stasis ulcers
