Is Leg Hair Loss a Symptom of Vein Disease?

Leg hair loss can be a symptom of vein disease, specifically chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). CVI occurs when the valves in the leg veins don’t function properly, leading to the pooling of blood in the legs and increased pressure in the leg veins. Over time, this can cause symptoms such as swelling, skin changes, and in some cases, hair loss on the legs due to a decrease in oxygen supplied to the hair follicles. For patients who are experiencing leg hair loss along with some of the symptoms mentioned, we encourage them to consult with a StrideCare vascular specialist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

What Causes Leg Hair Loss from Venous Disease?

Leg hair loss can either be a result of hormonal changes in the body or a symptom of the body’s system is not working the way that it should. When caused by a vein condition, the hair on the legs stops growing because the hair follicles are not getting the blood supply they need in order to survive. This can be caused by failing venous valves that do not allow the blood to properly circulate through the body.
